Manchester United are confident of signing Toby Alderweireld while Tottenham are targeting Matthijs de Ligt as a replacement, according to the London Evening Standard.

Alderweireld is expected to leave Spurs this summer after talks over a new contract broke down earlier this year.

Mauricio Pochettino has left the Belgian out of numerous big games in recent weeks and reportedly wants the club to sell him as quickly as possible to ensure a replacement can be signed in time for next season.

The Standard believes Manchester United are willing to spend at least £40 million to take Alderweireld to Old Trafford.

Tottenham will need a replacement, and the report echoes previous rumours linking Ajax teenager De Ligt with a move to North London.

The 18-year-old, who is already a full Netherlands international, has been tipped to become on of the best centre-backs in Europe.

Whether Spurs will be willing to sell Alderweireld to a direct rival remains to be seen. What’s more, Pochettino might want more of an established defender to take his place.
