Tottenham have had an offer turned down for Benfica defender Alex Grimaldo but could soon make an improved bid, according to reports in Italy.

Grimaldo is reportedly a target for Borussia Dortmund and Napoli, and it is a Naples-based radio station claiming Spurs are in for the left-back.

According to Radio CRC host Raffaele Auriemma, in quotes published by Gonfialarete.com, Tottenham’s current offer for Grimaldo is “unsatisfactory”.

As translated by football.london, Auriemma said: “Tottenham have already made an offer, for now considered unsatisfactory, and they could soon make another. Next week could be very important for the future of Grimaldo.”

If Spurs are genuinely interested in Grimaldo, he is likely being lined up as a replacement for Danny Rose.

Rose has been linked with an exit from Tottenham for some time – both Manchester clubs were said to be interested in signing him last summer.

However, that interest has receded in recent months and there is a good chance Rose will still be a Spurs player come the end of the summer transfer window.

Grimaldo would be an ideal replacement should Tottenham decide to sell Rose.

The 22-year-old has made 63 appearances across all competitions for Benfica since joining from Barcelona in 2015.
