Tottenham have seen a £45 million bid for Ajax midfielder Frenkie De Jong turned down, according to reports in Spain.
De Jong has been heavily linked with a possible January move to Spurs over the last week or so.
The 21-year-old is a reported target for Barcelona, but Tottenham are apparently keen on making a swoop for him when the transfer window re-opens in January.
Spurs didn’t make a single signing over the summer, and a long-term replacement for Mousa Dembele is still likely to be on Mauricio Pochettino’s shopping list.
According to Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo, Tottenham’s opening offer of £45 million has been turned down by Ajax, who have told the Londoners that De Jong is not for sale.
That fee would break Spurs’ transfer record and would be an unprecedented amount of money for the club to part ways with midway through the season.
If they are truly interested in De Jong, perhaps they should wait until next summer when Ajax are more likely to sell.
