Tottenham are interested in signing Cagliari midfielder Nicolo Barella in January, according to reports in Italy.

Barella, 21, has been in fine form in Serie A so far this season, scoring once in 12 appearances from central midfield.

And according to Italian outlet Calcio Mercato, Spurs are keen to make a move for him in the winter transfer window.

It is believed Mauricio Pochettino wants to sign a long-term replacement for Mousa Dembele, who is out contract at the end of season.

Dembele is sidelined until the new year with ankle ligament damage, so Tottenham may need to sign a central midfielder as soon as possible in case the Belgian’s lay-off is extended.

The Sun have also picked on the story. They believe Cagliari will listen to offers in excess of £30 million, and Tottenham are prepared to pay £35 million for Barella.

There is a good chance Spurs will spend in January considering the fact they failed to bring in any new signings over the summer.

The Londoners are beginning to reap the benefits from their last January signing, Lucas Moura, which could inspire Daniel Levy to do winter business once again.
