Barcelona are considering a January move for Tottenham defender Toby Alderweireld, according to reports in Spain.

The La Liga giants are believed to be on the lookout for a new centre-back with Samuel Umiti receiving treatment on a knee problem.

And Spanish outlet Sport claims Alderweireld is on Barcelona’s January shortlist, along with 12 other potential targets including Chelsea’s Andreas Christensen.

Alderweireld’s contract expires at the end of the season. Spurs have the option to extend it by a year but that would trigger a £25 million release clause that can be met in the final two weeks of next summer’s transfer window.

The Belgian was left out of Tottenham’s starting line-up for Sunday’s north London derby defeat at Arsenal, sparking fresh speculation about his future.

He was back in the team for Wednesday’s 3-0 win against Southampton at Wembley, replacing the suspended Jan Vertonghen.

It is still unclear whether Spurs will listen to offers for Alderweireld in January given his contract situation.

If he is sold, Tottenham will be expected to move for a replacement in the winter transfer market.
