Tottenham are keen to wrap up a £25 million deal for Genk midfielder Sander Berge as soon as possible, according to reports in Italy.

Berge has scored two goals and provided four assists from central midfield across all competitions so far this season.

The 20-year-old Norwegian is highly rated in Belgium and has reportedly attracted plenty of interest from Serie A clubs in recent months, including AC Milan, Roma and Fiorentina.

But according to Italian outlet Tutto Mercato Web, Spurs are now leading the race to sign Berge in the January transfer window.

Is is believed Genk value their star player at £25 million, a fee Tottenham are said to be willing to meet.

If a deal is agreed, Berge will be loaned back to Genk for the remainder of the season.

Spurs are in need of a new central midfielder. Mousa Dembele is out of contract at the end of the season and Victor Wanyama’s long-term fitness is questionable.

Dembele could leave this month and has been linked with clubs in Italy and China.

It’s unclear whether Tottenham are prepared to spend money on new players given the rising costs of the new stadium.

  1. You can’t get much cheaper in today’s market but I’ll believe it when he’s signed, Levy has a tendency in letting us down just when we need it. Can see it happening again.
