Tottenham are considering letting Christian Eriksen run down his contract, according to the Daily Mail.

Eriksen’s current deal expires at the end of next season and a report earlier this week claimed Real Madrid have made initial steps to lure the playmaker to the Bernabeu.

It is believed Eriksen currently earns £70,000 a week at Spurs, and the Dane wants those wages doubled to at least £140,000 a week.

The Mail claims Tottenham will consider letting Eriksen enter the final year of his contract, a situation that could see the 26-year-old leave for nothing at the end of the 2019/20 season.

Presumably, the club’s intention is to persuade Eriksen to sign a new deal by refusing to sell him with a year remaining on his contract.

Harry Kane is thought to be Spurs’ top earner on around £200,000 a week, so it’s understandable that Eriksen – one of the team’s best performers in recent years – might feel undervalued on his current salary.

Tottenham are certainly taking a risk if the report has any truth to it – hopefully the end result is a positive one for the club.
