A return to England with Tottenham or Manchester United would be better for Gareth Bale than staying at Real Madrid, according to former Spurs star Rafael van der Vaart.

Bale left Tottenham for Madrid in the summer of 2013 and has won four Champions League titles with the La Liga giants.

However, the Welshman has not been universally adored in the Spanish capital as a result of struggles with injuries and dips in form.

As a result, he has been repeatedly linked with a return to England. Spurs were mooted as a potential destination last summer but it is usually Manchester United who are tipped to make a move for Bale.

The 29-year-old may decide to stay at Madrid for another season this summer, but Van der Vaart believes his ex-teammate should consider a return to the Premier League, potentially with Tottenham.

“Perhaps [he should leave] but I think he wants to stay at Real Madrid and play more,” Van der Vaart told Cadena Ser (as relayed by ESPN).

“But I believe that a team like Manchester United or a return to Tottenham would be better for him because people in England are different to those in Spain.”

After Wednesday night’s defeat to Chelsea, it would be easy to suggest Tottenham need another top-class attacker like Bale to take them to the next level.

That said, Bale’s injury record and huge wages will make a reunion all but impossible.
