Mauricio Pochettino has said he was “not happy” with Harry Winks’ fitness against Borussia Dortmund, suggesting the midfielder could miss this weekend’s trip to Southampton.

Winks was substituted midway through the second half after going down on the pitch. He had been assessed before the game following a hip problem.

The 23-year-old generally impressed in Germany but clearly there was an ongoing issue with his hip, which has now combined with a groin injury.

He will be assessed again before Saturday’s visit to Southampton, but Pochettino has hinted Winks will play no part at St Mary’s.

“We need to assess him tomorrow but I am not happy after the Dortmund game. He never really was comfortable on the pitch,” Pochettino said (via the London Evening Standard).

“I don’t know but I do not expect that he’ll change too much from Dortmund to Saturday.”

Winks’ absence means either Eric Dier or Wanyama will step into the midfield against Southampton – find out who we picked in our predicted XI here.

Pochettino also revealed the club is set to hold talks with the England medical staff ahead of the next round of international call-ups.

Winks, Dier, Dele Alli and Kieran Trippier have all missed games through injury lately, so Spurs might be keen for a couple of them to be left out of the Three Lions squad.
