Tottenham Hotspur sent scouts to watch Benfica winger Jota last week, according to reports in Portugal.

Jota only recently broke into the Benfica first team and has made just three senior appearances for the club this season.

The 19-year-old has, however, impressed in the Portuguese second tier this term, scoring six goals and providing seven assists in 17 league games.

He made his first start against Dinamo Zagreb in the Europa League last week, and Portugese outlet A Bola claims Spurs scouts were in attendance.

The Londoners could face competition for Jota from German side Bayer Leverkusen, who were also said to be watching the youngster on the night.

It is believed Jota’s contract currently has a release clause of £25 million, but Benfica plan to offer him a new deal with a fresh release clause amounting to around £85 million.

If Tottenham are genuinely interested, they would be wise to move quickly and sign Jota before his release clause dramatically increases.

It remains to be seen whether Spurs will be targeting a winger this summer, but young affordable players are always likely to be on the shortlist.
