Tottenham Hotspur sent scouts to watch Lille midfielder Boubakary Soumare this week, according to reports in France.

Soumare was playing for France’s Under-20s side in a 1-0 friendly victory over Argentina.

And according to French outlet Foot Mercato, Spurs scouts were in attendance to watch Soumare, who has been compared to Paul Pogba in the past.

The defensive midfielder, 20, has made 11 top-flight appearances for Lille this season and is also said to be attracting interest from Juventus, Valencia, Borussia Dortmund and Roma.

If Tottenham are genuinely interested, it looks like they will have a lot of competition for Soumare’s signature.

Soumare could be swayed by the fact there is a gap in Spurs’ squad in central midfield ready to be filled by an incoming player.

Mousa Dembele left for China in the January transfer window and Victor Wanyama is thought to be on his way out this summer.

Eric Dier, Harry Winks and Moussa Sissoko will almost certainly stay put, but Mauricio Pochettino will know he needs to add more quality in the middle of the park.

Whether Soumare, a relatively inexperienced youngster, is the answer is up for debate.
