AS Roma are interested in signing Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld, according to reports in Italy.

Alderweireld is out of contract at the end of next season but can leave this summer if his £25 million release clause is triggered.

The Belgian has been linked with Manchester United but talk of a move to Old Trafford has gone quiet in recent weeks.

And now, Italian outlet TuttoMercatoWeb claims Roma are considering Alderweireld as an alternative to Marc Bartra.

It appears Bartra is proving difficult to take from Real Betis, so Roma could target Alderweireld instead.

However, the Serie A club failed to qualify for the Champions League last season and will play in the Europa League in 2019/20.

After Spurs’ incredible run to the Champions League final, Alderweireld will be keen to continue playing in Europe’s elite competition.

With that in mind, it’s unlikely the 30-year-old will be willing to join Roma unless they massively improve his current salary.

Realistically, Manchester United are the only Europa League club who will be able to do that.

  1. This Italian is the equivalent of the sun so called newspaper and anything written in their pages is made up fantasy. As for interest from Manchester United, you have to laugh and loudly too.
