Jamie Carragher has revealed that his former side Liverpool were interested in bringing left-back Ryan Sessegnon to Anfield this summer.

The 19-year-old finally joined Tottenham from Fulham for a deal worth around £25million on transfer deadline day after a transfer saga that went on throughout the window.

Sessegnon always looked likely to move to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, with Mauricio Pochettino a huge admirer of the former Fulham man ever since he burst on the scene back in 2016, but Carragher admitted that the Reds were also keeping tabs on the teenage man.

Speaking on his column with The Telegraph, the ex-Liverpool defender said: “This summer they have invested in the squad, but how many of the recruits did Manchester City or Liverpool want? They are the clubs Pochettino is measuring his squad against now.

“I know Liverpool watched Ryan Sessegnon, and saw another player for the future rather than someone who could go straight into the team at left-back.

“Pochettino is again working with a signing he is expected to develop over time rather than players who can make an immediate impact.”

Sessegnon is currently out with a hamstring injury he sustained whilst playing for England Under-21s in the European Championships in June, but Spurs are hopeful he will return after the next international break in time for the start of their Champions League campaign which begins in mid-September.

  1. Got to fill the quota. But one would think with the new VAR introduce , the application, the rule changes and decision Mr Clueless here would have something to write about. VAR is the biggest story and he could not find a story. Football turned journalist/columnist /commentators dont know when to take the partisan hat off.
