George Marsh made his first start of his career on Tuesday evening for Leyton Orient in their 2-0 victory over Southend United in the EFL Trophy.

The 20-year-old, who signed for the O’s on loan until January last month, made his senior bow in their 1-1 draw at Salford City on Saturday, but was handed his full debut at Brisbane Road in their Group C opener against the Shrimpers.

Marsh played the full 90 minutes as a goal in each half from Dan Happe and Dale Gorman saw Orient make the perfect start to their campaign and inflict more misery on former Tottenham assistant manager Kevin Bond, who’s Southend side have now lost eight of their nine games in all competitions this season.

Elsewhere, there was more good news for another Spurs loanee as striker Kazaiah Sterling was on target for Doncaster Rovers in their 3-1 victory over Lincoln City in South Yorkshire.

Sterling also claimed an assist against the same opponents in League One on Saturday and will be hoping to earn his first start since joining from Spurs when they host Rotherham United on Saturday.
