Jan Vertonghen, Heung Min Son and Harry Kane have been nominated on a 50-man shortlist for the UEFA Team of the Year.

The trio, who all played a major part in Tottenham reaching the Champions League final last season, have been named among an impressive Premier League contingent, which includes ten Liverpool players, who pipped Spurs to the European Cup in Madrid in June.

Vertonghen played ten matches, including all seven knockout games – with his most impressive performance coming in the 3-0 victory over Bundesliga outfit Borussia Dortmund where he claimed an assist for Son’s opener before sweeping home his first ever Champions League goal for the club late in the second period.

As for Son, he failed to score in the Group Stage but came alive with that goal against Dortmund before netting three of Tottenham’s four goals across the two legs against Manchester City in the quarter finals.

Harry Kane was the complete opposite, scoring four goals in the groups – including a fine strike against Barcelona – with his winner in Dortmund his only after that.

The XI is expected to be announced in January.
