Tottenham are interested in signing Mainz star Robin Quaison but have already suffered a setback in their pursuit of the striker, according to reports in Germany.

Quaison scored 13 goals in 32 appearances in the German top flight last season and has just one year remaining on his contract.

German outlet Sport Bild (as relayed by Inside Futbol) claims Spurs have made contact with Mainz over a possible deal for Quaison, but the Bundesliga club are apparently reluctant to lose their main goalscorer.

However, with just on year left on his current deal, it could prove difficult for Mainz to hold onto the 26-year-old Sweden international.

Tottenham need an able deputy for Harry Kane next term after struggling for goals when the England captain was sidelined through injury earlier this year.

Whoever comes in will have to settle for the bench most weeks, so a relatively unknown player like Quaison is probably more likely to come in than an established name.

It will be interested to see if Spurs intensify their apparent interest in the coming weeks.
