One option for Spurs in defence next season is to slot Steven Caulker into the back four in much the same way that Kyle Walker was made first choice right back after a loan spell at Aston Villa.

If the manager decides not to do that however, the player says that he would welcome another spell at Swansea and therefore another season in the Premiership.

“If Tottenham allow me back to Swansea, I’d be delighted to come back,” he said. “It’s a case of sitting down and discussing my future in the summer.

“We’ve been in contact regularly but it all depends on Tottenham, as I’m contracted to them.

“Another year with Swansea would interest me, of course.

Steven went on to say that his time at the Liberty Stadium had undoubtedly helped his development.

“I’ve really enjoyed playing alongside Ash and Garry Monk on the occasions I have done,” he added.

“I’ve learnt a lot playing week in, week out alongside such a dominant centre-half.

While we wait for news of Jan Vertonghen and a decision on Ledley King’s future, is Steven Caulker ready to take over in the centre of defence or is another year at Swansea a likely conclusion?

  1. I think he’d only play a bit part role next season, we seem to be very close to wrapping vertonghen up and likely to see Gallas and King stay another year. With Dawson also getting back to full fitness it may be more beneficial for caulker to get one more season and then we can let gallas go, hopefully move king to the coaching staff and bring caulker back in to the set up.

Great young player with a great future at spurs.

    • Most defiantly, Knock on wood and throw some salt across my left shoulder or what ever it is I hope i don’t jinx it when I say; it seems the Vert deal is on the stage and we’ll all have the great pleasure of watching a top defender. That sad I beleive that we might have another top class central defender in Caulker and sitting on the bench keeping it nice and warm here as the 4th option here at Spurs and only playing europa and cup games would stunt his growth as a player. Swansea is a team that plays much like Spurs and I think it’s in our best interest to loan him back.

  2. What do you mean take over in the centre of defence? The undoubted number one is Kaboul and one other beside him, it’s as simple as that and if they manage to land Jan Vertongen, he will be his natural partner in the centre of Spurs defence, both powerful dominent skillfull men, one right footed the other left footed. Having said that, I would definitely recall Caulker as back up with Michael Dawson purely because Ledley King has had his day sorry to say. He has been a fantastic player for us over the years but we can no longer rely on services or any of the old has beens brigade favoured by Redknapp.

  3. Nice article, been waiting for something to be written on this. We need to bring both Steven Caulker and Kyle Naughton back following great seasons with their respective clubs. Caulker, especially, has been immense and has scored a few goals too, and he scored for the U21’s the other night too. Kyle Walker was one of our best performers this season and I love his enthusiasm, always calling for the ball and getting stuck in. I think Ledders might need to accept he’s lagging a bit so we go with a defense of:

    BAE Verongen (c) Kaboul Walker

with Naughton, Dawson, King and Gallas to fill in a clever, rotational system similiar to what the other big clubs do.

  4. And Caulker!! Get rid of either Gallas or Nelsen (if Ledley can do another season), we don’t so many of these old heads at our club. We don’t need three at centre back for sure!!!

  5. No no no. We should be looking to the future now and in my opinion Caulker is a future captain and should definetely be starting a lot of games next season. I think the options at centre back should be Kaboul, Caulker,Dawson and Verthongen, with Ledley playing the occasional game when required

  6. Nelsen apparently moving to MLS,King specially recovering from another operation which will make it almost impossible to keep fit,Gallas is now 35 and injury prone,Dawson has missed 2 out of 3 seasons now due to an operation and coincidentally each time when he was back from South Africa. I think Caulker has a good chance to play 20 games next season. Besides I don’t know how seriously we will take the Europa Leauge next season, he will be playing in European games and League Cup etc. too. I reckon he will be in Spurs squad next season. Personally. With him in the squad we will not have any necessity to go and sign the likes of Nelsen on the 11th hour.

  7. Leave him at Swansea for another year to aid his development, but there again I would say that being a Swansea supporter. This guy has had a fantastic season and there is no doubt that a step up to central defence with spurs realistically is a no brainer. Would love to see him back at Swansea, but lets be honest, he’s a class act and deserves his chance at spurs. Brendan has his work cut out to find a quality player to replace Steven. Good luck to him in what will be a bright future.

  8. caulker will be going back on loan again next season, he has already said he wants to carry on his development and he will not start for us next season. so its 100% loan again for next season, it will maker him a better player.

  9. For God’s sake give youth a chance. Lets not keep playing the pensioners. Of the current centre backs Kaboul and a fit Dawson should be play. Caulker and Gallas should there as be back-ups.

  10. im not speaking defensive im so angry at the way spurs are treating our supporters i think we deserve to have leandro damaio and jan vertonghen, season after season we are given false promises and we never learn by our mistakes we want to see spurs achieve something please daniel spend the money and prove you love spurs as much as we do or pack up and let another investor in .
