Many of the club’s players were on international duty last night and the action featured a stunning goal from Gareth Bale and another impressive strike from Jermain Defoe – the reasons for its disqualification are known only to the referee.

Over in France however, Hugo Lloris may have produced the performance of the night in saving a penalty and taking the man of the match award against Belarus.

The only problem with the penalty was the fact that the visitors scored from the rebound but it doesn’t detract from Hugo’s overall performance. At 2-1, the hosts were struggling but their keeper’s heroics masked the display and ensured that France now have six points from their opening two games.

AVB’s mind is unlikely to be changed by any of this so expect to see Lloris start on the bench this Sunday but it has, at least, given the coach a timely reminder.
