Spurs’ Icelandic International Gylfi Sigurdsson scored the equalising goal in our away tie with Maribor last month and the midfielder is likely to play a full part in the reverse fixture tomorrow.

A win is vital if we are to stay in this competition and Gylfi believes that the key to success lies in an early Tottenham goal that will force the Slovenians to come forward.

“It would be ideal if we get an early goal,” said Gylfi.

“That means Maribor can’t just sit there and defend and it would open the game up. That would also get the crowd right behind us and it will be a great atmosphere. That’s important for us.”

Our opponents lost their previous away game by a narrow 1-0 scoreline and clearly won’t make it easy on the night.

“It’s still in our hands and we now have the advantage of playing at home. Hopefully we’ll use that advantage and take the three points,” Sigurdsson added.

“We want to progress to the group stage, so it’s important for us.”

Spurs continue to assert the seriousness of this competition but have yet to turn in a fluent performance in the Europa League this season. Three points is therefore vital and as Gylfi says, the early goal could prove crucial.

  1. I agree that an early goal is vital for us in any game, but with only one striker it is very difficult to achieve. We must start with Defoe and Adebayor. Why not try a 4-2-4 formation, with Bale, Lennon Defoe and Adebayor up front, or 3-3-4 with those same 4 up front?

  2. Two up front, quick passing, thru ball, running off the ball,no back passes,The most important point is no Awful Chants, lets adopt “You Win AGAIN” Bee Gees, but Spurs
words, we want to get modern,C.O.Y.S. is Ok. but forward
    You Supporters.New Training & Stadium,new Song !!

  3. Score early, is that our new ploy?
Should have tried that against wigan.
Sandro’s out. Hopefully Gylfi will start playing well, i’ve not been very impressed so far.

  4. Maybe he should chip in and start playing well rather than acting like he has been performing. I could of played better than him on acid.
