Brad Friedel only signed a new contract with Spurs in December – one that will take him through to 2014 and at the time, the move helped to dispel rumours of a January transfer back to Blackburn Rovers. The American international seemed set to see out his contract at the Lane as understudy to Hugo Lloris but there is a rumour today that Brad may be on his way after all.

Tottenham are being widely tipped to make a move for Chievo’s under 21 international Marco Silvestri who has spent the last two seasons on loan at Reggiana and Padova respectively. At 22, Silvestri may be happy to spend time on the bench before he is ready to challenge Hugo for the number one jersey.

The reports subscribe to the theory that Andre Villas-Boas is resigned to losing Friedel this summer but that goes against every suggestion that we heard when the 41 year old signed that contract last year.

  1. Strange one, He’s a great back up keeper but at this stage in his career if he has the chance to play every week then I’m sure he’ll take it

  2. I thought the idea, when he signed his new contract, rather than taking up the Blackburn offer, was that he was being offered some kind of playing contract/coaching combined contract. If that is correct and it was at his instigation, I can’t see the signing as young back-up for Lloris as altering that significantly, and it would certainly have no impact on the coaching side.

  3. Why not get this young keeper, hang onto Brad, and offer him a job that goes past 2014 — as a goalkeeping coach? He’s 42. He’s not going to get any more big-time appointments, and will be looking at what to do afterwards. Why not ask him to stay and help both Lloris and a young keeper learn their trade?

He’s been good to us. Let’s be good to him, too, and make sure he has an option for work after he hangs up his gloves.
