As we’ve already seen today, one more Christian Benteke rumour is doing the rounds and this involves a Jermain Defoe plus cash proposal in an attempt to land the Belgian international. Benteke looks like hot property this summer but change a few letters and you have Ecuador International Christian Benitez who is a different prospect altogether.
Benitez is 27 and currently playing for Mexican side Club America where he has a very healthy scoring record of 52 goals in 79 league appearances but that doesn’t tell half of the story.
The centre forward might just about be remembered for a loan spell at Birmingham City where he netted just three times in 30 league matches. The loan also followed a medical that revealed knee problems but then again that hasn’t stopped Demba Ba – as yet.
The Birmingham spell could be an anomaly – prior to that stint Benitez averaged more than a goal a game for Mexican outfit Santos Laguna and he has 24 goals in 58 games for the Ecuadorian national side. Alternatively, it could mean that the forward can’t cut it in the Premiership but at a reported fee of £9m is it really worth a punt?
Yes please for the former and no thanks on the latter.

He most certainly is not one of the top strikers in the world, he’s nowhere near it. Man U, Man C and Chelsea are all after him are they? If as you claim he is one of the top strikers in the world they would be, as would PSG, Barcelona, Real Madrid, AC Milan, Bayern Munich but of course none of them are.
I wouldn’t call Benteke one of the top strikers in the world yet but he’s got potential to be. Funnily enough, he probably had 2 of his worst games of the season against your lot. I also wouldnt say that he cost us a cup final spot either. Yes he missed a few chances but he scored one and conceding 4 goals directly or indirectly from a set piece cost us a cup final spot.
With Christian Benitez i think he was tricky but didnt finish on a consistant basis for the scum. Got to remember they only scored 37 goals all season that year with he who shall not be named as manager.
