Bongani Khumalo may have made no impression in his two and a half years as a Spurs player but the South African international made an instant impact with his loan club Doncaster Rovers in the Capital One Cup last night. The defender played the whole ninety minutes and as the game looked to be heading for extra time, Khumalo popped up to connect with a header and take Doncaster past league two opponents Rochdale.

Bongani doesn’t score too many – in fact that was his first senior goal since leaving for England back in 2011 – but it was a vital strike for Paul Dickov’s side and one which should give him an extended run in the team.

Of course, all of this is of little consequence for Spurs because they would not have sanctioned the loan move if they had really rated the player – particularly with a potential injury crisis at the heart of defence.

However, a strong start for his league one club could lead to a permanent deal for the 26 year old which at this stage of his Tottenham career is really the best conclusion for all parties.
