You may feel it’s fairly unlikely that Spurs will be interested in signing a defender when the transfer window flies open in a few weeks’ time but an isolated report, picked up on by Talksport suggests that the club could be in for Ajax’s Finnish international Niklas Moisander.

With Younes Kaboul installed as new club captain, it had seemed that the Frenchman, together with Jan Vertonghen would be the first choice partnership at the Lane but that pairing was split by Head Coach Mauricio Pochettino who selected Federico Fazio ahead of the Belgian for Saturday’s visit to Manchester City.

Vlad Chiriches had also been used on the left side of central defence while Fazio’s sending off at the Etihad means that one of those two men will step straight back in. Pochettino may have established a weakness in the defensive unit or he may want to take advantage of the fact that Moisander is out of contract in the summer.

The third alternative is that this is nothing more than rumour but at 29, the experienced Finn could, at the very least, be a better alternative as back up to the first choice centre halves.
