Spurs did what was required to progress to the knockout stages of the Europa League with a 1-0 win over Partizan and a performance that was uncomfortable at times – although at the end, the margin of defeat should have been wider.
Benji Stambouli scored his first goal for the club and should have had his second: The Frenchman opted for a bizarre lay off to Erik Lamela when one-on-one with the keeper. Partizan’s stopper also denied Erik with a brilliant late save but ultimately, the result was enough to send us through and satisfy our head coach Mauricio Pochettino.
“I am very pleased with the team and the players,” Poch said.
“I think it was difficult in the first half to play (due to the pitch invasions) but in the second half we were better and created a lot of chances.
“It is true that maybe we deserved to score another goal but in the end the job is done.
“It is important to go to through to the next round in the Europa League. It is a very good thing.”
So Spurs are through but there is one game left in this group phase – away to Besiktas on Thursday 11th of December.
