They say that the great teams were built from the back and it’s a philosophy that the management of Spurs have clearly taken to heart.

Having already signed right-back Kieran Trippier and central defender Kevin Wimmer, the club today added Toby Alderweireld to their back four options.

Will two quality options for every position in the defence, Mauricio Pochettino can now move on with rebuilding the rest of the side. The midfield area looks like the natural place to start.

With Paulinho and Lewis Holtby sold, Etienne Capoue having left to join Watford and Benjamin Stambouli poised to join him, the number of midfielders are dwindling. Nabil Bentaleb has signed a new contract and Ryan Mason will be looking to build upon his successful season, but the futures of the other midfielders still at White Hart Lane are somewhat up in the air.

New signing Dele Alli will probably be part of the squad but it wouldn’t be a huge surprise if he was loaned out at some stage of the season. Tom Carroll and Mousa Dembele are also competing for a place in the squad, but both have plenty to prove and could be sold if the right offer came in.

At least one new central midfielder needs to be signed and it’s defensive specialist that is required. Long-term target Morgan Schneiderlin seems to be on his way to Manchester United and it is now Everton’s James McCarthy that is being heavily linked with a move to White Hart Lane.

Is McCarthy the man you want or would you prefer Tottenham to target another midfielder? Let us know which midfielders you’d like Spurs to line up with next season.

  1. McCarthy not a top 4 signing although he is good..definitely need someone solid but shouldn’t we be trying to find at least one striker to help Kane.. Ade and Soldado are not gonna come good.. (sorry Roberto..we like you but we have given more than enough chances) Need to hear something happen upfront or we could be in big trouble.. Imagine a long term kane injury..we would have nothing..love our defensive potential tho but without kane we would be in all sorts..the midfield could cope as is as at a push with a strong defensive unit behind them, not ideal but would definitely choose an attacker first.

  2. sorry can’t agree with your headline… I think the reason we may have been linked with numerous possible midfielders in the media but the club not actually going for any is because they are probably happy with what they have (barring a defensive MF player maybe) in the form of Mason, Bentaleb , Carroll, Pritchard, Erickson, Townsend & Lamella (with Dembelle probably to be sold along with Lennon).
I think the striking option needs to be addressed sooner rather than later.

  3. Honestly… the midfeild named above sounds very light weight! No ball winner no one to carry the ball 10-15 yards (except Dembele sometimes) but £20 million for James McCarthy & Lennon….. SMH No No NO realistically i cant blame Levy for being tight with the cash! How can you go from paying £10 mill for Van Der Vaart 15 million for Modric to £20 million for James McCarthy.
Being tight as he is …. someone tell Daniel that there are cheaper options!
Sissoko (maybe its spelt wrong) from Newcastle would give us much needed steel in the middle of the park! Did i hear swap deal involving Townsend (rated at £15M)
Leroy Fer- Dutch International in the championship European Championship season….. Cheap and cheerful! QPR more than owe us … & we could always loan him
Diame at Hull ….. just saying we could do worse Oh we have Paulino Stambouli
but yeah a bit of pace and power is much needed for spurs.

  4. Splash the cash on benteke and Austin will give you a solid strike force to rotate all capable at top level and would seriously be considered for top 4 minimum. Keep loris and Kane sod utd scum we need to build and keep the likes of Townsend and dembele for cup rotation and injury back ups sell Lennon, Kabul, stambouli, chiriches,Ade, soldado, even though I still like Lennon yedlin and walker could do a decent job on the right wing. Delph would be a good CM but we have plenty in the middle of the park capable of bossing this year(bentaleb, mason,Carroll, and few other young ones who deserve a shot) and lamela, chadli, Townsend yedlin all good enough on the wings now defence is more solid

  5. we’ve got a decent ‘midfielder’ in the role that rooney takes
he’s got skill, vision and i believe he could come good …………..soldado

  6. What makes you say the defence is sorted?Last summer a whole new defence was bought and it didn’t stop us from conceding far too many goals. Is Aderwereild that good?if so why did Atletico loan him out last season and were happy to sell him this summer?just a point,Atletico were 1-0 up v Real in Champions League Final with 7 minutes to go.On came Alderwereild, and they lost 4-1,

  7. We will definitely need a ‘midfield General’, one who the team will listen to and play for on the pitch. This person must be willing to lead by example and be one of the hardest working players on the pitch during each match. He must be vocal and encouraging. I also feel it shouldn’t be Harry Kane. Bentaleb is closest to being that man. Strong in his position and mentally very passionate. Would need to show self control during anger periods. He may fit into the ‘Generals’ position after another couple of seasons. Mason could be the leader. He could be this years pleasant surprise.

  8. James McCarthy is decent. He goes under the radar because he quietly goes about his business. I hope we sign him. Ok, 20 mil might be a bit over priced, but that’s the paying rate of premier league players these days. I would be happy with McCarthy. I would personally like to see these signings.

    Mandanda (if lloris leaves)

    McCarthy

    Shaqiri

    Berahino

  9. I can’t believe we never appeared to attempt to sign Cabaye. He was in London yesterday,it wouldn’t have been beyond the realms of possibility so have sneaked him away for us.He would have been a good compliment to Eriksen.
I’m not convinced by Mandanda and he has no Prem.experience.There are any number of keepers from our top flight teams that we could sign, plus perhaps McGregor or Marshall. If Lloris was to go and I think the reason Vorm signed is that he was promised the no.1 spot in that event,a good no.2 like Butland or Schmeikel to push him and play fa and Europa cup games. That is plenty of game time for each.
A definite requirement is a striker to help Kane.I like Berahino and they know each other from the U21’s.I suppose it depends on whether Poch feels he would fit our system.
