Erik Lamela’s father Jose has confirmed that his son is in talks with Inter Milan.
Jose Lamela told La Gazzetta dello Sport, “We are in talks with Inter, so we’re discussing it.
“I can confirm the rumours are true and the interest for Erik is real. We are waiting for more developments over the next few days.
“We would like a return to Italy and are open to negotiations. It’s true that he gave his best in Italy and that is probably more suited to his characteristics.
“We’ll see what happens over the final few days of the transfer market. We are waiting for news too…
“Erik was very happy in Serie A and had two great years with Roma. We would like a return to Serie A and we appreciate the Inter option.”
Inter recently sold Mateo Kovacic to Real Madrid to balance their FFP situation. With the deal said to be structured as a €6m loan with the option to buy at the end of the season for a further €14m, it’s a transfer that won’t break the bank for them.
In contrast it’s a deal that doesn’t bring in much money for Spurs, at least in the short term. They have simply decided that it’s best to cut their losses on Lamela, with this deal giving the potential to get back a decent amount in the future if the Argentine impresses back in Italy.
It’s good news for Andros Townsend who has long been linked with a summer move despite being keen to stay at White Hart Lane. His stock has grown this season while sitting out injured. He simply can’t be any less effective than Lamela has been so far this season and more to the point it’s unlikely that Mauricio Pochettino will let two of the right wingers he used regularly last season, leave in the same window.
Should Yannick Bolasie fancy a move across London then it could also be good news for him. Pochettino will be short of wide options if Lamela leaves and it would be no surprise if another player came in.
