Tottenham fans were understandably delighted to see Hugo Lloris sign a new contract until 2022 in December last year.

Many have signed new contracts only to leave prematurely, but this one feels different. Lloris seems settled and is likely to stay with Spurs at least for the time being.

But, given that Lloris is one of the club’s elder statesmen at 30, Tottenham must concede that their skipper won’t be around forever.

And Harry Kane has already put himself forward as a candidate to succeed Lloris as Spurs captain.

Speaking to ESPN, Kane said: “Hopefully Hugo is here as long as possible and he’ll be the captain. But if he goes to another club or is injured, that’s a role that I’d love to take up.

“Everyone knows how I feel about Spurs and the connection I have with the fans. I see myself as a leader and we have a lot of leaders on the field.

“So why not? I’d love to be captain of Tottenham and hopefully one day England as well.”

Many believe Eric Dier has all the credentials to be a future captain. Perhaps even Dele Alli could be persuaded to stay with Spurs for the long term if handed the armband.

So, when the times comes, who do you think should succeed Lloris?
