Despite some slightly dodgy recruitment over the last few years, Tottenham appear to have landed on their feet when it comes to centre-backs.

Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld are generally considered two of the best central defenders in Europe right now.

But injuries have caused an unhealthy amount of rotation in Spurs’ back four this season. Eric Dier hasn’t look comfortable in the middle of defence, while Kevin Wimmer’s days at the club seem to be numbered.

Cameron Carter-Vickers is certainly one for the future, but it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Tottenham add a centre-back this summer.

The Star reports Spurs are interested in Hull City’s £15m-rated defender Harry Maguire, but could face competition from the likes of Everton and Southampton.

The 23-year-old has impressed in a poor Hull side this season. He appears to fit the bill in more ways than one — Mauricio Pochettino likes to work with young players and Maguire is out of contract at the end of next season, which could mean he is available on the cheap despite his current £15m price tag.

  1. I’ve been watching this lad and I’ve been impressed with him – the makings of a top central defender. Better than John Stones
