Jan Vertonghen has suggested his Tottenham teammate Christian Eriksen is now one of the world’s best playmakers.

Spurs will be without Eriksen for their Champions League trip to APOEL on Tuesday after the Dane pulled out of the squad through illness at the last minute.

Asked about Eriksen’s quality, Vertonghen told the Standard: “He has made unbelievable progress.

“I have known him for many years and he has always been a great talent but in the last two seasons he has made such big steps forward.

“Everyone always said that with his quality, he could become the best playmaker in the world.

“He scores goals and provides assists and, when he drops deeper, he does very well. In the last two seasons, he has been enormous.”

Mousa Dembele is also out of the APOEL game after injuring his ankle prior to Tottenham’s 3-2 win at West Ham.

“Mousa knows his own body better than anyone,” said Vertonghen. “Hopefully, he is back at 100 per cent really quickly as he is a very important player for us.”

Vertonghen is suspended for Tuesday’s match following his dismissal against Borussia Dortmund a fortnight ago.
