Tottenham have made an offer for Espanyol defender David Lopez, according to reports in Spain.

Lopez played in 37 of Espanyol’s 38 league games this season and was part of a defence that kept 12 clean sheets, helping his side to secure an 11th place finish in La Liga.

Spanish outlet Pericos Online claims both Spurs and Newcastle have tabled offers for Lopez, and Mauricio Pochettino has contacted the 28-year-old centre-back personally.

This is possible considering Pochettino played for and managed Espanyol in the past, and is believed to still have a close connection with the club.

Lopez has a £35 million release clause in his contract and Espaynol are apparently open to selling him this summer.

Tottenham are in need of a new centre-back, with Toby Alderweireld expected to leave the club in the comings weeks having failed to agree terms on a new contract.

Ajax teenager Matthijs de Ligt is believed to be the club’s priority defensive target, while Newcastle United’s Jamaal Lascelles has been mooted as an alternative.
