Tottenham have approached Real Madrid over the potential signing of Marco Asensio but the player has turned down a move, according to reports in Spain.

Asensio, who has scored four goals in 22 appearances across all competitions so far this season, is contracted to Real Madrid until the summer of 2023.

The 22-year-old Spain international is highly-rated in La Liga but has struggled to cement a place in Madrid’s starting line-up, resulting in rumours of a possible exit.

And according to Spanish outlet Marca – as relayed by Sport Witness – Mauricio Pochettino is interested in bringing Asensio to Spurs in the January transfer window.

The report suggests Tottenham are likely to do business in January after failing to bring in any news players over the summer.

It is believed the Londoners have made an approach for Asensio, but he has already intimated he wants to stay with Madrid and become a success at the Bernabeu.

Spurs likely would have been quoted a huge fee anyway, so a deal was unlikely in the first place.
