Tottenham are interested in defender Alex Grimaldo but are unwilling to pay Benfica’s €35 million asking price, according to reports in Portugal.

Grimaldo has provided six assists in 24 games from left-back in Liga NOS this season. The 24-year-old has made over 150 appearances for Benfica since joining the club from Barcelona in the summer of 2016.

Portuguese outlet Record (as relayed by The Boot Room) claims Spurs are among the clubs keen on Grimaldo. However, it is believed Benfica value him at €35 million (£32m), a price none of his suitors are willing to pay.

If Tottenham are genuinely interested in Grimaldo, surely it is worth paying £32 million, which isn’t a great amount in today’s market. Danny Rose is likely to leave the club permanently in the near future – Spurs could use the money to partly fund a deal for Grimaldo.

The Londoners are in need of a new left-back with Rose on his way out, Ben Davies struggling for consistency and Ryan Sessegnon not yet showing enough to earn a regular place in the team.
