Jan Vertonghen is close to joining Roma after officially leaving Tottenham, according to reports in Italy.

The Belgian’s exit from Spurs was confirmed after the final day draw with Crystal Palace. Vertonghen spent eight years in north London and was a regular starter under multiple managers until this season.

And now it looks like he is close to signing for another club.

Italian outlet Corriere dello Sport (as relayed by Roma Press) says Vertonghen has agreed a two-year contract with Roma. The 33-year-old will apparently earn €3 million a year at the Serie A club.

This claim is backed up by Italian journalist Nicolo Shira, who believes a €3m-a-year contract has been put on the table by Roma but doesn’t go so far to say there has been an agreement yet.

It will be strange to see Vertonghen playing in a different club’s colours. The centre-back was a key part of Tottenham’s journey under Mauricio Pochettino and became part of the furniture at the club.

It will be interesting to see if Spurs look at centre-backs in the transfer market this summer.
