Although we know that Harry Redknapp was in the stands watching Bryan Ruiz play for FC Twente last night, it doesn’t seem that the manager was all that impressed with what he saw.

By all accounts, Harry had left before the Costa Rican’s late equaliser but son Jamie, speaking on Sky after the game claimed that his Dad had said Ruiz had ‘done OK’, but the generally impression was that he failed to make his mark on the Spurs boss.

Perhaps that’s why Harry has come out today and publicly stated that Spurs are in talks to sign Emmanuel Adebayor from Manchester City.

“The chairman is talking to Man City about the player but where they are at, I genuinely don’t know,” said Harry.

While it was believed that a loan deal was previously being thrashed out, there is a hint that a permanent deal may be discussed.

So it appears that we may get some confirmed news very shortly but in the meantime, is Harry right to dismiss Bryan Ruiz so quickly and turn his attentions firmly on Adebayor?

  1. Ruiz would cost £13.5m apparently.

That would be a bargain for a player who scores a goal every other game from the right wing.

If Adebayor is on a loan (or even on a reduced permanent deal) it must surely be possible to sign Ruiz as well, then you could let another striker go (Pav or Crouch not Defoe).

For the fee mentioned it would be criminal not to sign him imo.

  2. Mind-boggling. What else does Ruiz have to do, apart from age 5 years, have played in the Prem for 10 years and have played for one of Harry’s teams in the past?
Sign both of them. Accept the bids for Crouch/Palacios/Niko/Bentley and put the proceeds along with Keane’s fee towards them. Job done.
Oh, and stop fannying about and get Samba or Cahill and then we can relax and look forward to the season.

    • Sometimes you have to wonder what Harry is up to. And how come is son is now giving a bloody running commentary on Spurs affairs? At the weekend wee Jamie was saying we should let Modric go.

  3. So let’s get this straight. Adebayor is on 170k a week. Our max wage is reportedly 100k less than that. So are you guys expecting Man City to top-up the remaining 100k a week for him to line up for Spurs – one of their rivals that they have refused to deal with for the last 2-3 years? Why would Citeh want to do that? The just offloaded Jo, Robinho for massive losses, they would rather do this with Adebayor. You guys are really optimistic…. Don’t want a loan signing anyway. Name a loanee that did well at Spurs.

    • Apparently we are giving city 2 million as a loan fee so that should cover more of his wages without actually breaking our wage cap.

      • That sounds even worse, and unrealistic. We just hung on for Robbie Keane for 2 years in order to get 3.5m for him. You are saying that we happily will throw 2m out of the window to acquire a loan signing?

    • TonyRich.
I dont recall Spurs ever having had a player or players in on loan besides, should’nt you be worrying about your own team instead of ours?

  4. FIRST IMPRESSION OF ANYTHING IS A BIG DECIDER BUT THE AVERAGE PLAYER IS NOT HARD TO DEFINE , HARRY KNOWS IF HE IS NOT WATCHING CLASS OR WORLD CLASS A CHEAPIE CAN MAKE OR BREAK YOU AND £13,000,000 / £16,000,000 IS A RISK TAKING CHEAPIE IF IT COMES OFF YOU ARE THE GREATEST BUT IF IT FAILS BADLY THE FANS ARE LOOKING FOR BLOOD , IN TO-DAYS FOOTBALL WHERE POSSIABLE YOU MUST BUY WORLD CLASS OR JUST CLASS THERE IS NO ROOM FOR AVERAGE IN THE PREMIERSHIP IF YOU WANT TOP 4 FINISH THAT`S THE WAY ITS GOING AND OF COURSE A MULTI MULTI ZILLION BILLIONAIRE OWNER !

  5. I wouldn’t mind seeing both players coming to Spurs, but is that possible? That would leave us with 5 strikers competing for positions… assuming we also don’t play a 5-man midfield to accomodate VDV in a more attacking role (not playing from the wing).

  6. I agree Redknapp dismissed Suarez as not being able to play upfront on his won lool, he knows feck all, he is living in the dark ages wanting a big number 9, they dont work anymore, Carroll disrupts Liverpool, Crouch disrupts everyone and Dzeko haasnt settled at City.
Skillful strikers who can link play are the new breed it doesnt matter about size, Ageuro, Tevez, Suarez, Hernandez and Rooney are the best strikers in the league and not one of them is over 5ft 9ins

Ruiz is 6ft 1 but plays like a skillful striker…..just do me a favour youtube the costa rica vs USA game on youtube he scores 2 blinders……….and another video of Bryan against France in which Thierry Henry commentates and states how much he rates him.

Redknapp only signs what he knows….Defoe, Crouch, Krancjar, Pienaar, Bassong, Keane, Palacios and conincidently all of those 6 arent first team regulars or are getting sold.

Sandro and VDV were Levy signings

    • I’ll give you Mido, but he was trying to get a perm deal…and was crap once he achieved that goal. However, Gudjohnsen did ok but was backup, Frazier Campbell, Andy Booth… We are trying to build. Let’s not waste time on temporary solutions. When loan ends we are back to square one.

  7. Harry dont know shit. How can you judge a player on one game. I believe thats exactly how it was .He should have a database in his head of most the quality players currently around the world.Thats his job. That could provide him with a edge .This aint the 80s where he had to drive in his 3 wheel car on a windy wet day to check out some non league striker. We have the internet now whats this droopy faced wafflers problem

  8. We should sign both of them- Ruiz is a right winger not a striker- he just scores a lot of goals as he likes to cut in and shoot- he is a class act and could really take the Premier League by storm if we buy him- I dont really want Adebayor- there is a reason why City and Arsenal who are both our rivals do not want him so why we want to get him i do not know- Ossie Ardiles said yesterday, we needed something special up front and im sorry but Adebayor is not that- I hope Spurs will bring in Ruiz, Falcao/Higuain, Adebayor only to replace any of the strikers we have now not be the 4th striker we buy and Diarra only if we let Palacios go. Kranjcar needs to stay!Come on Levy and Harry get in the players we actually need!COYS!

  9. I often disagree with TonyRich but have to agree entirely in his somewhat sarcastic defence of Harry Redknapp.

He has done and continues to do a fantastic job as our manager – we are in a great position, with a great squad, the press (and unfortunately some of our own fans) seem to have written us off before the season has started. We will do well without the pressure of being one of the favourites and I think that Liverpool and Arsenal are very average – 4th place is ours if we want it.

  10. I Agree with what most ppl are saying on here. Luiz off the right would do a better job then Lennon. Lennon may excite but as we all know, hardly any end product. Luiz imo would give us end product which we sorely need from the right. Personally im amazed Harry isnt taking any risks.. i say that as im assuming he will be off after this season, taking the England job? so surely some risk taking is a good idea. I would sign both of them.

  11. Harry has done a good job, no desputing that. but his transfer record is awfull, nearly all players he has signed we would be happy to sell, and we could replace easily. he signs old players with no sell on value, and he had no part in the sandro,VDV deals. nearly shipped Bale out on loan before realising what a player he is, and now he will allow Giovanni and Krancs to leave apparently. Do you know how much it would cost to replace these types of players?? Adebayor makes sense as he can play his conservative 4411 – and if Ruiz is a RM then we clearly dont need him as we have plenty of options there. If he is a forward/winger then take a gamble, seem to remember some frenchman taking a gamble on a goal scoring winger a few years back! COYS

  12. Having seen Ruiz play yesterday I would be flabbergasted if we don’t buy him. He stop class. Sell Crouch, and we ‘d have Ruiz, Defoe, Pav and Kane – or more likely since Harry will be too cautious to start Kane for another couple of years, Adebayor.
I’m really wondering about how Harry Redknapp thinks….he’s also indicating we might sell Modric, which would be ruinous. If we can afford at least half of Adebayor’s salary we can afford to give our superstar midfielder a raise to keep him happy at WHL.

  13. I am a bit unsure of where the money made from last years champs league has gone. I know ‘Arry could sign 4 more players, but with £40 odd mil that is 4 £10 million pound players. Are these first team material. We have a lot of ‘squad players’ (Jenas, Bentley, Crouch, Hutton, Palacios) already. I can only think that Harry is thinking of Adabayor – who would be good, Benayoun and Kalou – if the papers are right and a megabucks striker (I am not sure whether Ruiz fits the bill) or another Striker and Diarra – letting Crouch and Palacios leave. If this was the scenario, I think that it would be a good one as VDV cpould play instead of Modric and contribute more goals, especially at the fortress. Not sure how Kalou and Benayoun would fit in though – or would they simply add more depth to an already overloaded squad. All ifs and buts, the media seem to make the stories rather than listen and write what has been said. PS – I have always wanted Modders to stay but I am starting to ask myself was this out of stubborness as Chelski want him? because he is a graceful player? or becuase Levy had said he is staying and I have bragged that he will while the gooners loose all their best players? Can VDV and Modders compliment each other?

  14. Sorry – in relation to the thread – it is important to know what sort of supply line you will have for the strikers when trying to decide the best striker for the job.
