The quest for a new defender at White Hart Lane is likely to see transfer rumours gaining momentum over the next few weeks. At present, the usual suspects such as Gary Cahill and Chris Samba seem to head the queue but if Spurs are priced out of these signings, they may need to look abroad.

Mehdi Benatia is a Moroccan international who currently plays his football for Serie A outfit Udinese and is credited with helping his side to a Champions League berth this season.

His club have already received some interest – a fact which is acknowledged by his agent Claudio Vagheggi who said: “Benatia is an important player so it is normal that several clubs have looked at him.

“Udinese, however, are currently reluctant to discuss transfers, there is interest from some English and Spanish clubs.”

It’s believed that £12m would be needed to prise the 24 year old away from his current employers and with Spurs’ injury issues at the back, it’s natural that the media has placed the club at the front of the queue for Benatia’s services.
