We all suspected that there would be some clearing of deadwood at White Hart Lane and some newspapers are claiming this morning that as many as five players could leave Spurs before the season starts.

Most of those names won’t surprise anybody – Jenas, Bentley, Bassong and Naughton but the fifth player on the list may cause some debate.

William Gallas joined the club two years ago this month and when he’s been fit, has shown just what a quality centre half he is. Fitness is the issue however and last season he only featured in ten games for the club.

The Frenchman is also rapidly approaching his 35th birthday and on those bare facts, it might make sense to release him. This would also suggest that Steven Caulker is going to be given his chance by AVB and back up Dawson, Kaboul and Vertonghen.

However, do we have enough cover at centre half to release a player of Gallas’ quality?

  1. quickly yes

kaboul Vert dawson and caulker are enough

    gallas would hinder caulkers development…

at 35 gallas is looking for one more pay-day in the MLS and who can blame him

  2. Unless Fryers is planned as 5th choice at CB aswell as cover at LB, I can’t see why we’d offload both Bassong and Gallas having already lost King and Nelson (albiet those 2 covered by Vertonghen and Caulker) and Corluka, who covered at CB too? Gallas has the quality but the greater wages, Bassong could raise more of a fee due to his lesser years.
Maybe they’re both being made available, but only the first to leave will be released?

  3. If we had loadsa money I’d say keep him but at a guess he’s on very good wages and for a 3rd/4th choice, injury prone 35 year old, we’re better saving the wages. Jake can always cover if we really need it.

I’d be more concerned about losing Naughton, although I guess we’ll get £5m+ to add to the pot.

  4. In a word NO!
He maybe old, but having seen him at Watford he is still quality and class.
He is still the type of player you would have possibly on the bench to bring on to help steady the defence when we are under pressure to hold onto a lead.

  5. I think that you have answered your own question – Caulker has proved he can cut it in the premiership, so we have 4 good players for the two centre back positions. I say let him go.

  6. Its the wages more than his age for me as mentioned we have 4 good CB’s and HUD & Jake if we were really struggling with injuries can play back there. For me id keep Naughton can cover both LB/RB

    Sell – Bassong – Bentley – Jenas – Gallas
    Keep – Naughton – Gio – Carroll – Townsend
    Loan – Rose – Kane – Smith – Fredricks – Falque

  7. I didnt want to lose Ledley and Gallas together.

That’s too much experience to lose in one summer. I think we can get one more good season out of him.

Sell Bassong. Then we have 5 good CB choices.

  8. I don’t see any point in letting him go. Good, experienced cover who’s earned the chance to play his final year. We signed him for free so letting him go at the end of the season won’t hurt.

Just hope AVB prefers Caulker over Gallas. He needs games. All is well, let’s not moan about players we already have – the problem is a lack of additions (up front!!).

  9. I question the wisdom of this decision. We will be playing a lot of games this season and four CHalfs is too light in my opinion.

More worringly when are we going to buy a striker(s). The season is less than two weeks away and we are very short (literally with JD leading the line) up front.

When AVB was appointed we were greeted with headlines that he had £50 million to spend and maybe more if Modders went but where has the money gone?

Looks like another disappointing transfer window (although I appreciate there is plenty of time left before it closes) particularly when the Goons are splashing the cash.

  10. Yes as soon as possible he is injury prone, getting on at 35 yrs old this month, not worth reported £60000 a WEEK! Typical Harry signing – easy option.

      • Cazorla + Podolski + Giround – RVP = ??

30 goal strikers are hard to find…..not sure why you are so confident……no reason to believe your signings will deliver.

      • Hmmm. Vermaelen: 26 years old with 36 caps for belgium. Vertonghen: 25 years old with 39 caps for Belgium. Back up? Nah. Next best thing more like! Younger and more experienced at international level.

          • Yet Vert.. is Vice Captain… Not Verm Lol! We got the better deal, Your only posting here cause you know it so you feel like trying to make our Verm is some super defender!!

  11. His Wage demands should be enough to let him go. We do have enough cover and could do with freeing up his wage for the ManU youngster Fryers.

  12. Can everyone be patient on the TRANSFER FRONT. We all know we need a striker. AVB has already said they won’t be rushed or be forced to buy someone that is not right for the squad. Above all we all know what Levy is like.

Spurs fans relax – Levy will sort this!

        • Good then.. we will play Messi only when playing against spuds to give 12-0 for Arsenal. Other games.. benched. Messi will originally being signed to destroy spuds and he’d very happy to do that for us. Well, after all he’s best friend of cesc in barca, and cesc is a long live gunners, so cesc told him to destroy one of EPL shits with the initial name of ‘s-p-u-d-s’. COYG!

    • Do u have any knowledge of the game and how much Levy would spend in one window on players who have not played in the prem before.

      fcking idiot

Also stop posting stuff that u get off videogames on other sites because it dosn’t make sense.

  16. The simple answer is no we need his experience Vertonghens shown against a former Premiership player Cahill he still needs time to adjust to AVBs high line. Losing King is bad losing Gallas will mean Vertonghan has a virgin season before him and needs time.

  17. Tbh it is Training with guys like Gallas.. That will make Caulker better cause he is the most Experienced defender we have.

Age should not matter as it is One Season and Could use Gallas with Caulker in the Europa League because Caulker would learn so much more with him than he did with Williams!

  18. Think that William Gallas should be kept at least until January to allow the new defence to be assessed properly.
Ledley was the lynch-pin of our defence and if AVB requires the back four to play high up the field it may take time for players to adjust and blend. I thought Kaboul improved a lot last year and is worth a 1st team slot. With Dawson returning from injury, Vertonghen in his first year and Caulkner joining late from the GB squad there will be competition for places. Fryers appears to play CH and LB so could add to this if his tribunal ends successfully. Bassong and Khumalo are both still on the books.
I think that if Gallas is a positive influence on the players he should be retained until the new year at least. What I can’t understand is why we are looking to offload Kyle Naughton so quickly, with Corluka leaving, any injury to Walker would leave us short of cover. I can understand why AVB might want to sell/release Bentley and Jermaine Jenas and why he might want to give Giovani Dos Santos one last try.

  19. I think four centre half’s vying for two spots is ample and if gall as was to stay due to his experience and personality with his desire to still play regularly who edge caulks into fifth choice which would hinder his development of undoubted ability to replace ledley one day. I for one was unsure when we signed gall as and although he could have played more he has rarely been found wanted in the lily white shirt. For this reason as a good servant I would let him move on to where he can play week in and out and also afford Steven caulker more football whilst along with Bentley jenas bassong get some big wages off the books thus tweaking the wage structure for future signings and keeping star players. Huddlestone and fryers also can play at the back. Spurs got offered vermarlan before arsenal but scouts deemed him not good enough. FACT. that makes him spurs reject.

  20. Could be useful to bring on the younger players this season and help them make the transition to a new coach etc rather than keep then likes of Caulker out the team. He must know he’s back up now and if AVB likes his influence then why not keep him this season? With Leds hanging the boots up i think he would be a useful influential and experienced player to have around. I’d rather see Bentley, Jenas, Bassong and other deadwood leave first. At least there’s a role for him!!

  21. gallas has stated this is his last season in uk.he wants to return to france.one year left on his contract.today if sold spurs can get a fee.one year on he goes for free.what would any club do?

    • See what you’re saying Tony but in terms of a transfer fee for player at that stage of his career you’re talking peanuts anyway… If the wage issue isn’t a problem i can’t see the harm in him staying until his deal runs out but it wouldn’t be a disaster if he left either. He’s the only older outfield player we have now and i think he could come in handy, having said that he’s the kind of player QPR might want!!

  22. ANTO

well said spurs are crap and have won not anything
who are the 3 clubs to do the double?
    Chelsea
    Arsenal
    Man Utd

Spurs could not develop a player like RVP he is world class.

Stop worry about Arsenal and look at yourself.
You finish below them EVERY season.
