With Benoit Assou-Ekotto’s continued absence from the side, Spurs head coach Andre Villas-Boas has been forced to play others out of position owing to lack of cover. However, even if BAE returns shortly and impresses the boss, there are growing suggestions that AVB will look for a permanent solution to the problem in January.

With Danny Rose, who was a converted left winger, at Sunderland, Spurs had no natural cover for Benny when he picked up his knee problem. After Kyle Naughton and Gareth Bale were used out of position, Jan Vertonghen slotted in seamlessly but the Belgian is adamant that his future is at centre half.

One reported transfer target is Jan’s former team mate Toby Alderweireld, a 23 year old who has been with Ajax since 2008. Alderweireld has also played alongside Vertonghen in the national side and with 19 full caps for Belgium, it’s thought that he might be available for as little as £7m. One problem could be the positioning, with the player currently taking over from Jan at centre half – he’s versatile but once again, left back may not be his ideal position.

The concept of replacing BAE or at least providing decent cover seems a sound one but are the press simply opting for Toby Alderweireld because of his links with Jan?

  1. To be honest we already have a great LB in BAE so cover would be easier to find Jan wants the middle spot and i along with everyone else wants him there Caulker is coming on leaps and bounds but still needs a little work on his positioning but will be great next year gallas has maybe one season left once our injurys subside we will have one of the best back fours in the prem Walker Kaboul Vertongen BAE put Lloris in goal and i think we will be extremely hard to break down COYS

  2. BAE is top class but bringing in a younger player who is a true LB would be a good idea. Naughton is decent back up but he’s a RB by trade.

  3. Well he’s played RIGHT BACK for Belgium, definitely not left back. Could be brought in for a CB rotation of Caulker, Vertonghen, Kaboul and him, assuming Dawson and Gallas will be transferred. Could even be competition for Walker. Definitely not a left back though. We really need another left footed centre back…or left back.

  4. To be frank BAE is world class player it is a fact…But our defence is bad now a days are because of uncertanity in goalkeeping…I mean Friedel was fantastic in first two to three games but now he is no longer good….He couldn’t get a clean sheet….So bring Lloris on goal and once BAE and Kaboul become fit start with BAE on left and Replace Gallas with Jan….and rotate the other place with Caulker and Kaboul

  5. THEIR MUST BE AN UP AND COMING LEFT BACK AT THE CLUB WHO IS SPURS THROUGH AND THROUGH AND TO PROMOTE HIM TO THE SQUAD WOULD BE A MASSIVE LIFT FOR HIM TO BE EKOTTO`S DEPUTY AND UNDER THE WING OF EKOTTO IF YOU LIKE AND SAVE US A FORTUNE , I CAN`T BELIEVE THERE IS NOT A YOUNGSTER COMING UP THROUGH THE RANK`S AGE IS NOT A CONCERN IF THEY ARE GOOD ENOUGH THEY ARE OLD ENOUGH LOOK AT YOUNG STERLING OF LIVERPOOL , NAUGHTON IS UNCOMFORTABLE AT LEFT BACK HE IS WEAK ITS THERE FOR ALL TO SEE EVEN IF HE IS A RIGHT FULL BACK I THINK HE IS STILL WEAK .

    • I would have thought that’s not too hard from what I’ve seen! I’d also be more inclined to say Fletcher, considering he has scored almost all of Sunderland’s goals is probably ahead of him.

  6. young kid called STEWART i believe seen a few times for u21s
looks impressive hope i got the right name he is our left back
because a few defenders impressed me but know programme
