After we urged Spurs to go out and snap up Toby Alderweireld earlier today, it now seems as if a deal to bring Vlad Chiriches to the club could be back on. The first mention of the Steaua Bucharest defender came around the same time that Steven Caulker was sold to Cardiff but the story went quiet after the Romanian club’s owner made a reported phone call from his jail cell.

Gigi Becali, who was in for infringing local property laws said.

“Who are Tottenham?! Do not do any transfer, my name is Gigi Becali! I’m not a slave to anybody! We have an important game in the Champions League, why can’t they wait?”

At the time it was claimed that Steaua would be looking to offload the player in the winter but with Tottenham needing a fast Caulker replacement, a deal would need to be done sooner.

However, the stories have emerged once again although it’s not entirely clear why but with reports of a deal in the region of £7m, the Romanian international may now be in a race with Willian to become our fifth signing of the summer.
