The Spurs spending spree is set to continue with supporters awaiting any developments on the Willian / Lamela rumours today. In the meantime, one area that hasn’t been touched is the defence and AVB’s comments earlier this week contained mixed messages regarding possible strengthening in this area.
“At the moment we need to strengthen at the back but this is a decision we haven’t yet taken bearing in mind the development of a player like Ezekiel Fryers,” Andre told talkSPORT.
“This is a consideration we still have to make. We’ll keep monitoring transfers in and out and do our business when appropriate.”
When Steven Caulker left the Lane, Spurs were heavily linked with a move for Steaua Bucharest’s Vlad Chiriches but that seemed to be buried after a bizarre intervention from the club’s jailed President.
However, one man who seems very much available is Ajax centre half and former team mate of Jan Vertonghen – Toby Alderweireld. The 24 year old Belgian centre back spoke earlier this month of his desire to play in the Premiership.
“It depends if there is a club coming that I want to go to,” Alderweireld told Sky Sports News. “I didn’t hear from those teams, but those are beautiful clubs and the Premier League is a beautiful competition, so we will see.
“If they [Tottenham] are very interested then I will hear what their plans are.”
The defender looks a perfect fit for Spurs but papers report that Arsenal are about to swoop with a £6m bid. Obviously that figure converts from Arsenal currency to a much higher sum but in the context of Tottenham spending, Toby Alderweireld could be something of a bargain.
