Etienne Capoue proved his versatility by slotting into the centre of defence and turning in an assured display in Saturday’s victory over Sunderland. The French international had been one of our more impressive summer arrivals with calm performances in defensive midfield and having now returned following a long injury lay off, the player earned praise from his manager.

“It was a great performance by Etienne,” said Andre Villas-Boas. “We had to shuffle the back four completely, shift Daws to the left, Naughts came in at left-back and all of them were brilliant.

“Etienne deserves credit because he was looking for a performance like that and he gave it over the 90 minutes.

“We spoke to him during the week, we all want him to succeed here and great performances like that mean he’s back on track. Everyone is extremely happy for him,” AVB added.

With up to four players competing for two places in defensive midfield, Capoue’s adaptability is welcome when there are injuries to the back four and questions being raised over the club captain Michael Dawson. He’s fine for a covering role but did Saturday’s display suggest to you that Etienne deserves a bit of a run in the heart of our defence?

  2. There are lots of games coming up, including 2 possible League Cup semi-finals in January. We’re getting injuries, like most teams, so the full squad will be needed. Capoue’s versatility will be invaluable.

  5. AVBhas to play Townsend on the left with Azza on the right, they can switch when needed, those two with there pace practically force the central midfield to release the ball faster, if they dont they get shown up and replaced, simples, more speed is wheat we need and what we want, how many times have our attacks come to nothing because they slow the pace down and enable the opposition to get back in there shape?

  6. Really like the look of vlad at cb, he’s only jut getting the feel of things over here and will get better and better. We have real quality with verts and kaboul when he’s match fit. Capoue to fill in with lots of games to play is a bonus. COYS.
