A hamstring injury keeps Jermain Defoe out of this evening’s second leg Europa League tie with Dnipro and the cynical amongst us would say it’s a convenience ahead of a big money move to the MLS.
As the club’s leading scorer in European Competition, it might have been fitting for JD to take to the field rather than make a walk on appearance at half time. The other issue is the failure to buy a striker to cover his absence in the January transfer window – Defoe has barely featured since the deal to Toronto was announced.
Although Jermain did return to White Hart Lane after being sold to Portsmouth, this must surely be it and the striker will leave as the club’s fifth highest goal scorer of all time with 143 in 363 appearances.
As a previous article on this site showed, there is another story behind those stats and many will rue Defoe’s failure to score against the bigger sides. However, as he makes his exit this evening, what is your abiding memory of his time at Spurs?
