Earlier in the day, Spurs confirmed that French international goalkeeper Hugo Lloris had signed a new five year deal at the club and it was good to start the morning on a positive note. Along with Lloris, Jan Vertonghen was the player most under media scrutiny at the end of our disappointing campaign but while Hugo stays for now, Vertonghen’s future is less than settled.

At the start of the day, talk of a move to Barcelona began to circulate and the player’s agent claims that several clubs are interested in signing his client.

“Several teams are interested in Jan,” said Mustapha Nakhli. “I cannot confirm or deny whether Barcelona are one of them.

“Tottenham is not a small club. It is too soon to give an answer. Several clubs have registered their interest in Jan. We’ll see.”

Elsewhere, it’s being reported that Barca are actually chasing Mats Hummels as a first choice. Back in May, Jan suggested he would stay at White Hart Lane, irrespective of who was appointed as manager so could this be a case of an agent talking up his client ahead of another official announcement regarding a Tottenham player’s new contract?

  1. Not so long ago Vertonghen said that he was staying at Spurs for at least another two years. No doubt there’s disappointment over Lloris, so I suppose this is the consolation.

  2. The Lloris bullshit was bandied about only a couple of months ago and smacks of same old same old purely because there isn’t anything further to write about THFC. Just a few days ago the Daily Star and assorted low class rags were making up stories that Lloris was definitely going to be off to either PSG, Monaco or Juventus, the previous month they were writing that Barcelona was his destination because of their need for a top class goalkeeper after Victor Valdez was release from the club. The usual bloggers/sheep (mainly Arse supporters) were full of it. Jan Vertonghen himself came in for the same treatment a week after the season ended because of their need for another centre half as a replacement for Puyol. Vertonghen himself played down the rumours irrespective of who the new manager at Spurs would be and the rumours died down but Belgium are out of the World Cup and the same bull has reared its head yet again this time an insipid price tag of £17.5M has suddenly been attached. The Billy liars wont stop there and you can bet that next Summer our star players will again be linked with moves to a number of clubs even if we do manage to get into the Champions league. Nameless sources as per usual.
