We may not have got everything right when predicting the team for Saturday’s North London Derby but Vertonghen in for Chiriches was a fairly obvious switch. After a solid enough display against Nottingham Forest in the League Cup, the Belgian was drafted in alongside new club captain Younes Kaboul as the back four weathered sustained pressure for much of the match.
So is Vertonghen and Kaboul the best centre back pairing? Jan spoke after the game and seemed more than comfortable alongside his French international skipper.
“Arsenal had a lot of possession but we defended well as a team, we worked very hard,” Vertonghen said on the club’s official website.
“We have a good understanding, Younes and I, and we fit together well. We dealt with the attackers but as a team we can be happy.”
Chiriches, Eric Dier and possibly Etienne Capoue are the alternatives but, barring injury, should Mauricio Pochettino persevere with the same central pairing that started Saturday’s game?

you are forgetting fazio matthew. He will be awesome and push bothe kaboul and verts for a starting berth. Once we hav a fit Walker back and davies finds his feet we will have a tremendous defensive unit. Looks like verts has got over his sulking spell not been capatin, hope so anyway.

Fazio will be more relaible once settled in and good signs from kaboulonly help the team and keep players on their toes. I reckon Walker under MP will flourish when fit. Coys
