Following Sunday’s slightly fortuitous win over Aston Villa the focus of controversy, from the home team’s point of view at least was on the incidents leading up to Christian Benteke’s sending off. Naturally, Villa manager Paul Lambert was particularly incensed with the actions of Ryan Mason in the lead up to the dismissal.

“The lad put his head in Christian’s face so I can understand why Christian lifted his hand and pushed him away,” Lambert said.

“You can’t do that but it’s easy to see why he did it. That changed everything, the whole complexion of the game changed.

“When someone puts their head in your face, your natural instinct is to push them back.”

But it seems there could be some ramifications as far as Mason is concerned with reports that he might face retrospective action from the FA. Many would concede that Lambert had a point after the game and any punishment could rob Spurs of their promising young player for three matches.

Elsewhere, there are stories circulating that suggest Spurs will be offering the midfielder a new contract in what has been an extraordinary few weeks for a man who we all thought was set for another loan or possibly even a permanent sale.
