Speculation over Jan Vertonghen’s future continues to be debated in the gossip columns and it’s unlikely to go away while the Belgian remains on his current contract. Jan isn’t exactly guaranteed a starting slot in the first team either so was anyone fooled when he spoke about making 200 appearances in a Spurs shirt?

Vertonghen appeared for the 100th time in Saturday’s forgettable 0-0 draw with Crystal Palace and immediately took to twitter to express his views.

“A clean sheet is positive but we wanted to win. I’m happy to have made 100 apps for the club & hopefully I’ll go to 200.”

Being pleased with a clean sheet is stretching it when you’re looking for positives – particular when it’s largely down to your goalkeeper but Jan went a little more in depth when asked to summarise the match later on.

“The fans are not wrong to boo us,” said Vertonghen. “They want to win and I want to win. I understand their frustration.

“I think we should be winning these games as well. And we try to. We just have to find a way to beat these teams.”

But still the rumours circulate of a switch to Manchester United or Liverpool. Would the Belgian choose to stay and battle it out or would he take the easy option in January – assuming that it arises?
