The former Tottenham midfielder Wilson Palacios has been given a free transfer by Stoke.

Spurs signed the Honduran from Wigan in January 2009 for £12m. The defensive midfielder’s battling qualities made him a fans’ favourite in the opening months of his time at White Hart Lane.

Sadly the form of Palacios sharply declined after the body of his kidnapped brother Edwin was found in May of that year. Palacios would continue to be a key member of the team that qualified for the Champions League in 2009-10, but – quite understandably – he did not look quite like the same player that joined and became something of a bit-part figure in 2010-11 – his final season at White Hart Lane.

Stoke signed him for £6m but his fortunes did not improve, as he made just 53 appearances during four seasons at the club. Let’s hope that Palacios can find a new club where he can make an impact again, just as he once did at Spurs.
