The Mirror have today reported that the long-term Spurs target Victor Wanyama is reluctant to sign a new contract with Southampton.

Wanyama has been offered a five year deal by the Saints, but with only 18 months remaining on his current contract he wants to wait until the summer to see if Tottenham make another move for him.

Spurs’ interest last summer prompted Wanyama to put in a transfer request, but with his value diminishing fast as his contract runs down, he’s likely to be sold if he doesn’t commit his future to Southampton.

With Eric Dier having impressed in a defensive midfield role, it’s unlikely that the club would want to spend major money on strengthening that position. Wanyama’s valuation would surely be reduced if he makes a move at the end of the season, making him a viable option for the role.

Dier has barely had a rest this season, with Mauricio Pochettino reluctant to play alternatives such as Nabil Bentaleb in the holding role. In Wanyama, Tottenham could pick up a specialist defensive midfielder who Pochettino knows well from his time at Southampton. Watch him in action below.

  1. how are you going to get him on the cheap.. he has a year left on the contract and Arsenal will surely bid against you .. not to mention a few others.. given Levy’s history of tight fisted funding,, I wouldn’t back you to land him.. dream on though.
