Former Tottenham player Andros Townsend thinks Danny Rose is the “best left-back in the country.”

Townsend was speaking to Goal when he was quizzed on who his favourite footballer to play against is.

The ex-Spurs winger said: “”To be honest, the player I like playing against the most is Danny Rose.”

He added: “He’s probably the best left-back in the country in my eyes. In training at Spurs we used to go at it in the sessions and we’d kick each other a lot so I do enjoy playing against him.”

Townsend’s Crystal Palace lost 1-0 at White Hart Lane earlier this season.

And Rose could only put his hands on his head when Erik Lamela nutmegged Townsend late in the second half. Rose claimed he was impressed, but wishes Lamela had done it to anyone but his old pal.

Townsend has been out of the England fold since leaving Tottenham, but will be keen to impress new manager Sam Allardyce this season.

Allardyce has selected Rose ahead of Luke Shaw in his first England team for the opening World Cup qualifier against Slovakia.
