Despite showing improvement on the pitch and in the league standings since Mauricio Pochettino’s arrival, Tottenham have struggled with recruitment.

Last summer was particularly disappointing, with three signings — Moussa Sissoko, Georges-Kevin N’Koudou and Vincent Janssen — all falling short of expectations since joining the club.

Steve Hitchen recently arrived as Spurs’ new chief scout, but could Mauricio Pochettino do with a technical director, or ‘Director of Football’, to help him in the transfer market.

The club hasn’t had much luck in that regard previously. Damien Commolli is generally considered retrospectively disastrous, and Franco Baldini infamously signed the ‘Magnificent Seven’ to replace Gareth Bale.

If Tottenham can find the right man, however, then a technical director could be very useful, particularly if he has an eye for recruitment.

ESPN report Wolfsburg sporting director Olaf Rebbe has dismissed speculation he could join Tottenham or Manchester City this summer.

The 38-year-old has been in his current role on a permanent basis for just two months, but reports in Germany suggest Spurs have contacted him through a middle man.

It’s clear Tottenham are in the market for a director of sorts. It will be interesting to see how much say Pochettino has in transfers if and when somebody is appointed.
