Tottenham are “reluctant” to meet Toby Alderweireld’s £150,000-a-week wage demands, according to ESPN.
Reliable journalist Dan Kilpatrick claims contract talks between Spurs and Alderweireld broke down last month.
The Belgian apparently thinks he is worth wages in line with the Premier League’s best-paid centre-backs.
But Tottenham don’t want to pay Alderweireld more than the club’s top earner, Harry Kane, whose weekly salary amounts to £110,000 plus bonuses.
Alderweireld’s current deal expires in 2019, but Spurs have the option to extend it by a year. However, that would trigger a £25 million release clause.
Regardless of the situation, Kilpatrick also claims “neither Spurs nor Alderweireld have given up hope of reaching an agreement.”
This is in no way the bitter dispute that the sports hacks want to make it out to be. It is early and there is lots of time. Most speculation by the pseudo reporters was started by some clown who called himself a “friend and advisor” of Alderweireld’s who mouthed off about his earnings. I suspect he was trying to get himself a gig as Toby’s agent. It didn’t work except to stir up the amateur sports writers.
Hope they can sort it out as he’s definitely worth more than the £50k he is reportedly on currently.
